Redbutterfly won the Pega Star Futsal Tournament, beating Puspa FC 2-0 in the final contested at the Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) Sports Complex last Sunday.

Puspa FC looked certain to defend their title after advancing into the final via a single goal in the semi-finals against hosts Pega Star FT.

Champions Redbutterfly also booked their slot by a similar scoreline against Elastico.

According to the organisers it was a hard-fought final in which both teams had equal opportunities on goal.

Yet luck was not on Puspa FC, with Redbutterfly denying them the opportunity of lifting the crown once again by netting twice in the final.

Pega Star FT coach Nordin Tujoh presented the champions with their prize, the Pega Star Futsal Tournament Trophy and a prize money of $310.

Defeated finalists Puspa FC had to be content with their prize of $210.

Joint-third place Pega Star FT and Elastico both took home trophies.

A total of 19 teams took part in this sixth edition of the competition, first kicking off in 2008.

Pega Star Futsal kicks off on Sunday

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Friday, June 11, 2010

As the 2010 World Cup kicks off in Johannesburg, South Africa, today a local futsal tournament will kick off this weekend at the Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) Sports Complex.

Some 22 teams will battle it out to the top of the Pega Star Futsal Tournament to be held this Sunday.

The teams will be divided into four groups and only the top two sides can make it into the play-offs.

Pg Amirrulzam Pg Kamalludin, a member of the organising committee, hopes that all the managers of the participating teams could be present for the draw which will be held tomorrow at the Meeting Room of the Berakas Sports Complex at 2.30pm.

One of the teams that will feature in the tournament are Puspa FC, the defending champions.

However, it will be wise for them to be on guard as last edition's defeated finalists Kota Juniors are also in the competition.

"Hopefully this time we will be able to clinch the title," said Steven Yeo, the Kota Juniors manager, when contacted yesterday.

Other teams to watch out for are Redbutterfly, Xbiz and Syah Kampong who also competed in the previous edition. The group stage is scheduled to start at 8.30am, while the knock-out stage kicks-off at 7.30pm.

The champions will take home $500, while the first runners-up and second runners-up will get $300 and $200 respectively.
